About the Water & Sewerage Corporation

The Bahamas Water and Sewerage Corporation (WSC) is under the jurisdiction of the Minister of Works & Urban Development. The Corporation is a wholly owned Government organization, entrusted with managing, maintaining, distributing and developing the water resources of The Bahamas.

 
The Water and Sewerage Corporation Act of 1976 established the Water and Sewerage Corporation and defines the responsibilities of the Corporation, including but not limited to:

  1. Providing water supplies for domestic, business, and other uses;
  2. Providing adequate drainage and disposal of sewage and other effluent;
  3. Expanding and extending the Commonwealth’s water and sewer systems to all parts of the country;
  4. Ensuring and controlling the optimum development and use of the nation’s water resources;
  5. Serving as advisor to the Minister responsible for the water and sewerage resources and systems of the nation;
  6. Drafting regulations for the responsible Minister’s consideration and approval; and
  7. Registering and servicing users of the water and sewerage systems.

These initiatives are further strengthened by incorporating sound and prudent fiscal practices in our daily operational strategies.

 

Organisational Structure

The control and administration of the Water & Sewerage Corporation of The Bahamas is the responsibility of the Minister of Works & Urban Development. Under his direction, a Board of Directors, consisting of six members heads the Corporation. A Chairman and a Deputy Chairman are appointed from within the Board of Directors.


The Board makes policy decisions and is constantly informed of important developments in the daily operations of the Corporation by the General Manager (GM) who has full responsibility for the daily operations of the Corporation and is the principal liaison with the Board of Directors.

 
A team of Executive Officers, all of whom are stationed in New Providence, assist the General Manager. Each member of the Executive Team is responsible for managing a major division within the WSC, namely Business Operations, Engineering & Planning, Human Resources, New Providence Operations, Family Island Operations and Internal Control & Compliance.

 
This executive body is fully supported by a group of 430 dedicated personnel, 335 of which are stationed on New Providence. The remaining 95 members are dispersed throughout the family of islands and cays of the Bahamas including, Inagua, Bimini, Great Harbour Cay, Mayaguana, North & Central Andros, The Abacos, Moors Island & Grand Cay, Sweetings Cay Grand Bahama, Eleuthera, Spanish Wells Harbour & Current Islands, The Exuma mainland and neighbouring Staniel Cay & Black Point, Long Island, South Andros & Mangrove Cay, San Salvador, Rum Cay, Crooked Island, Ragged Island, Acklins and Long Cay. These areas represent the diversity of The Bahama Island Chain in terms of size, population and availability of water resources.
